LGA1700 Socket Repair: A Precision Board-Level Fix from Our Lab

A client recently contacted us for assistance with completing a custom PC build. The system was based on a Gigabyte Z790 motherboard with an Intel Core i5-12600K processor and 32GB (2×16GB) of DDR4 memory — a smart, cost-efficient choice in a market where DDR5 prices have climbed significantly.

While waiting for the power supply to arrive, the client noticed something concerning. During inspection, we discovered a severely bent pin in the LGA1700 socket, along with several slightly misaligned contacts. Damage to an LGA socket is serious — unlike older PGA designs, the pins are located on the motherboard itself, making repairs delicate and highly precise.

Many shops consider this type of damage non-repairable and recommend replacing the entire motherboard. However, this was a high-end Z790 board, and replacement would have been unnecessary and costly if a precision repair could restore it.

In our lab, the board underwent a high-precision LGA1700 socket repair. Using magnification tools, controlled lighting, and micro-alignment instruments, we carefully restored the bent CPU socket pin and corrected the surrounding contacts. This type of work falls under what is often referred to as board-level repair — a level of service that goes beyond standard part replacement.

Once the socket was restored, we proceeded with the full assembly: the i5-12600K, a tower-style Cooler Master air cooler, an ASUS ROG GeForce RTX graphics card, SSD storage, and installation inside a modern tempered-glass RGB case.

The result: clean POST, stable BIOS detection, and a fully functional system.

This case is a reminder that a bent CPU socket pin does not automatically mean a dead motherboard. With the right tools and careful hands, even fragile LGA sockets can often be restored through precise motherboard socket repair techniques.

Another successful recovery — straight from our lab.
