When a “Good Deal” Gaming PC Doesn’t Even Boot

Used Gaming PC Repair — Delray Beach Case

This case started as a computer repair in Delray Beach involving a used gaming PC.

Buying that PC can look like a great deal — especially when the specs seem solid on paper. In this case, the system was purchased on eBay for about $700, with a configuration that looked perfectly reasonable:

  • Intel i5-12400F
  • RTX 3060
  • Gigabyte B760 ATX motherboard
  • 16GB Corsair Dominator DDR4
  • NVMe SSD
  • MSI MAG case

Given current prices for memory and storage, it seemed like a good deal.

Except it didn’t boot.

No POST. No display. Just blinking diagnostic lights alternating between CPU and memory error. And yes, this computer repair in Delray Beach involved multiple hardware and assembly-related failures.

After opening the system, the situation became much clearer — and worse.

Motherboard with liquid damage and dirty CPU socket

The motherboard had visible traces of sticky residue across the surface, especially around the CPU socket and VRM area. This wasn’t just dust — it looked like liquid exposure that had dried over time.

At the same time, the CPU cooler was not properly secured. During transport, it likely shifted and put pressure on the socket, bending multiple pins.

This wasn’t a single issue — it was a chain of problems stacked together. The system had to be fully disassembled, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, and carefully inspected. Problems like this are common in used systems — especially when the build quality is unknown.

CPU socket pins required delicate realignment — a time-consuming process where one wrong move can permanently kill the motherboard. Memory and GPU had to be tested separately on a bench. During testing, more issues became obvious:

  • One of the RAM modules was completely dead
  • The GPU had a non-working HDMI output (DisplayPort only worked)

After cleaning, socket repair, and component testing, the system was brought back to a working state. With only one working RAM module installed and proper cooling setup, the PC was finally able to boot and run stable.

This is the part most buyers don’t see. A system can look great on paper — but hidden damage, poor assembly, or transport issues can turn a “good deal” into a complex repair project.

Custom PC Builds in South Florida

If you want to avoid surprises like this, it’s often better to build a system correctly from the start. I provide custom PC builds and upgrades in South Florida, including custom PC builds in Boca Raton and nearby areas.

If you bought a used PC and it doesn’t boot, crashes, or behaves unpredictably — the issue is often deeper than it looks. Proper diagnostics can save the system — but sometimes what seemed like a deal turns into hours of repair work.
